A Legacy of Faith & Community
Deep in the heart of western Fayette County, near the serene banks of Camp Creek, a remarkable story of faith, perseverance, and community began to unfold in 1897. Holly Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church emerged from humble beginnings, embodying the spirit of dedication that would define its legacy for generations to come.
In those early days, before the first permanent sanctuary was built, the congregation's devotion knew no bounds. The faithful gathered under a simple brush arbor, where the canopy of leaves served as their first roof, and in the welcoming homes of fellow worshippers. Their prayers and hymns rose to heaven just as earnestly as they would later do within proper church walls.
The church's first major milestone came through the generous spirit of Flem Arnall, whose donation of land and building materials allowed the congregation to construct their first sanctuary. This act of kindness laid the physical foundation for what would become a cornerstone of spiritual and educational life in the community.
Beyond its role as a house of worship, Holly Grove AME Church played a vital part in educating future generations. For over six decades, from its founding until desegregation in the 1960s, the church operated a school for African American children in grades 1-7. Despite limited resources and relying on donated textbooks, the school provided essential education to the community's youth, embodying the church's commitment to both spiritual and intellectual growth.
The congregation's monthly worship services in those early years were precious gatherings, bringing the community together in faith and fellowship. As the years passed, the church's influence and service to the community continued to grow, leading to the construction of the present church building in 1980. This new chapter in Holly Grove's history was further enriched when the church was annexed into Peachtree City in 1987, integrating this historic congregation into the fabric of the growing modern community.
Today, Holly Grove AME Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and perseverance. From its humble beginnings under a brush arbor to its present-day sanctuary, the church continues to serve as a beacon of hope, worship, and fellowship, honoring its rich heritage while embracing its role in today's community.
